7 Reasons to Study Sport in 2020
There’s arguably no better place to study a sports related course than in Manchester with its history, culture and active sporting community.
These days you don’t need to be a passionate Blue or Red supporter to become one of the 18,000 people employed in the sporting industry in the area.
At places like Adidas, Umbro and British Cycling, as well as big clubs like Manchester United and Manchester City there are plenty of opportunities right on your doorstep, which brings us nicely to our first reason to study sport:
#1. Endless opportunities
Sport is one of the biggest reasons that people come together socially in the UK, whether they are playing or spectating. Hundreds of thousands of people attend live sporting events throughout the week, with millions more watching live sport televised from around the world. So if you want to watch, play or study sport, the sheer number of opportunities available in the local and national area is very hard to beat.
#2 The fitness industry is currently booming
Did you know that nearly 10 million people in the UK have a gym membership? Or that in England alone, around 8.9 million people take part in fitness activities for at least 2.5hours per week. To counter this there are roughly 189,000 people in the United Kingdom with an occupation in the sports and fitness sector, of which 62,000 are fitness instructors according to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport. The fitness industry is only expected to rise from here, with the general population becoming more health conscious and access to gyms becoming more inclusive.
#3 Sport is becoming more diverse and inclusive
One of the underlying lessons that sports students are being taught in college is how to make the industry more inclusive to all. Women’s football is gaining momentum in popularity and national campaigns such as ‘Out for Sport’ are paving the way for LGBTQ+ participation in sport.
Schools and Colleges are making an effort to ensure everyone gets a fair chance, with sports clubs and gyms identifying and tackling potential barriers, from clamping down on prejudiced comments and altering dress codes so hijab-wearing women can participate, to training coaches to communicate better with deaf people.
#4 The world is your office
A high majority of sporting and fitness-related professions will have you breathing in the fresh air every day. After gaining a qualification and some industry experience you could take your skills international and work as a ski instructor in Canada or France, or stay locally and work as an adventure instructor in the Peak or Lake District.
5# Advance your learning anywhere in the UK
Sport and fitness is one of the subject areas which has seen a big increase in course variations throughout the UK. The popular career sector now has a growing demand for higher level expertise in performance analysis, business management, and community engagement, as well as hands-on participation.
