Competing against the world’s best in Shanghai
Competing against the best trainee chefs in the world in Shanghai beckons for star student Ben Metcalfe, who has been selected for the UK squad of the ‘skills Olympics’
The professional pastry learner won a silver medal in the finals of the WorldSkills UK competition for students and apprentices in Birmingham in November, for his epic chocolate and sugar work in the confectionery and patisserie category.
Competing against the best the UK has to offer, the 18-year-old came second for his performance over the three-day contest, which included the construction of a show-stopping, metre-high, Toy Story-themed dessert!
With WorldSkills Shanghai 2021 is in his sights, Ben is looking forward to the opportunity, which attracts entrants from 80 different countries.
Ben from Cheadle said: “I’m really excited about the opportunity and very grateful for it. I’m buzzing! My family and friends are really happy for me and can’t wait to see where it will take me in the future.”
The UK squad embarks on 18-months of training as part of the WorldSkills UK Talent Programme and find out whether they have made the cut for WorldSkills Shanghai 2021 next year.
Trafford College Principal Lesley Davies said: “I am absolutely delighted that Ben has been selected for the WorldSkills UK squad. His achievements in the competition are a tribute to his talent and his hard work.
“Securing a place on the world stage is testimony to the amazing Hospitality and Catering Team we have at Trafford College, who helped Ben practise for the contest and have many years of UK and international industry experience between them.
“We are looking forward to what the future holds for our catering superstar.”
