During times of uncertainty, spirituality can be all the more important to many of us. In the holy month of Ramadan, our award-winning Health and Social Care student, Equalities Council member and Student Ambassador, Esha Mumtaz, takes the time to reflect on how fellow students might best observe this special period in the Islamic calendar.
As we all know Ramadan (fasting month for Muslims) has approached. Ramadan is the most sacred month for the Muslims. During the entire month, Muslims fast every day from dawn till sunset. It is meant to be a time of spiritual discipline, increased charity and generosity, extra prayer and intense study of the Quran.
In this month, almost 1.6 billion Muslims observe fast. We care for our students who might be fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. So here are some practical tips for them:
- Don't skip Suhoor (pre-dawn meal). Consume plenty of high fibre foods, such as whole grains, high fibre cereals, fruits and vegetables.
- Try doing something productive during the day e.g. reading, writing and drawing.
- Light exercise is also considered healthy during fasting to keep you active and fit.
- Don't overeat during iftār (break fast).
- Begin iftār with dates, providing you with an immediate source of energy. Rehydrate yourself with plenty of water.
- Try eating more proteins and carbohydrates.
- Avoid eating fried foods, salty foods and high-sugar foods.
- Celebrate! This is the most joyous month of the year! Enjoy meals, blessings and time with your family.
