Students got the opportunity to quiz MP for Sale and Altrincham West Sir, Graham Brady, on his role representing Conservative Party backbenchers at a special visit to Altrincham Campus.

Sir Graham took time out from talking about Brexit in the Houses of Parliament to discuss questions from students about how he got the job as chairman of the 1922 Committee, which is made up of Tory Party members.

UK Parliamentary Ambassador for Trafford College Group, Michelle Mclaughlin, said “Our invitation to Sir Graham was the latest in our college-wide initiative to engage with parliamentary education and he was delighted to attend and participate fully in a dynamic question and answer session.”

“Questions ranged from his opinions on the current Brexit impasse, to the importance of young people exercising their democratic right to vote. He gave inspirational advice about how young people can get involved in local and national politics and making their voices heard.”

Students from all courses regularly get the chance to participate in question and answer sessions with VIPs to boost their learning, including those on A-level Politics, History, English and Business Studies courses.

During the Conservative MP’s visit, College Principal Lesley Davies called on students to use their right to vote.

Lesley said, “I encourage you all to vote and use that right. Until then it is still right for me to express views on your behalf. You are local constituents and can make a difference. Write to your MP, you will always get an answer because you are listened to.”

Since the visit, Sir Graham has successfully tabled a motion in our withdrawal from the European Union to create an alternative resolution to a hard Irish border, which has been called the ‘Brady Amendment’.

He visited a packed room of students in the Creative Arts block on Friday January 18.

You can register to vote online or discuss your concerns by email to MP for Sale and Altrincham West Sir Graham Brady.
