Graduating class make history at Manchester Cathedral

The first graduation of both Trafford and Stockport Higher Education students was a resounding success, celebrated in the magnificent surroundings of Manchester Cathedral.

Students studying a Higher Education degree or qualification at Trafford have been made a part of our College history this year, as they have been included in the first joint graduating class with the cohort of students at the University Centre Stockport College.

Taking place at the beautifully iconic Manchester Cathedral, students were greeted by a procession of lecturing and college leadership staff, led by Principal Lesley Davies OBE and Dean of Higher Education, Mark Harris. Over 160 graduands and 370 of their closest friends and family were in attendance, to applaud and cheer as students collected their acknowledgment of graduation during the ceremony.

Lesley Davies OBE, Princial and Chief Executive said: “We are here celebrate the fact that over half of our higher education students are the first generation in their families to enter higher education.

“This year we have seen the highest achievements rates than ever before – with a more than 90 percent pass rate and over 25 per cent of our degree students achieving first class honours.”

During the prestigious ceremony Paul Highton, former Wales and Salford City Reds rugby player, was welcomed as the evenings keynote speaker. As well as thanking the University Centre Stockport Dean for the invitation to the momentous occasion, Paul shared his educational experiences and the trials and tribulations that led him to be an influential member of the Greater Manchester community and a national advocate for mental health.

Paul said “It was an honour and a privilege to be asked to be a keynote speaker at a packed out Manchester Cathedral, and deliver an address on a topic that I am passionate about. Thank you Mark Harris for the invitation,”.
