Meet 'Mr Christmas'
Meet Phil Berkovitch our gas assessor and storekeeper who every year takes on an additional role as ‘Mr Christmas’, decorating the College in return for donations to charity.
Phil volunteers his time – and a lot of his personal belongings – to decorate Stretford Campus off Talbot Road into the feast of festivity it is for December. This year the moving light display created in the window of the College store room includes some unusual stock – the balloon from a toilet cistern. Can you spot the heating valve?
Over the last four years that Phil has stepped in as Santa, the displays have got bigger, better and brighter. This year they include a projector and moving train in Reception, a Christmas tree that shoots fake snow in Apprenticeships and a wreath garland or two in ACS, the department responsible for the issue of gas safety certificates.
Phil, who started as an apprentice at the College in 1966, said: “I love Christmas and I like to go mega! Last year I raised enough for eight presents in the Cash For Kids campaign and this year I hope to go one better.”
Staff and students can leave donation for Phil’s contribution to Cash for Kids outside Stretford Campus store room’s Christmas window.
