Engineering the fastest go-kart in the North West

A team of apprentices have been putting their engineering skills to the test by designing their own go kart to race in a North West competition.

For the ProtoEv Challenge, schools, colleges and apprenticeship training providers convert petrol-fuelled carts into high-powered electrical vehicles to pit against each other on a race track.

Trafford College staff spotted the opportunity to take part in the contest, organised by aspiring Formula 1 driver, Blair Henry, as a way of delivering a project management unit for our HND Engineering Apprenticeship.

Apprentice Dane Evans, who works for building management systems company, Detail Design Engineering, while studying with us, said: “It is great Trafford College has enabled us to do this. I’ve gone from studying plumbing here to becoming an HND apprentice, and now I’m about to race my own project.”

Apprentices have been learning the soft-skills of team-work, time management and working to a budget as well as the chance to apply mechanical and electronic engineering skills, knowledge of aerodynamics and understanding of energy efficiency as part of the project.

Fellow team members, Jim Hassall and Tom Linaker work at technology company, Siemens, which has funded the project.

Assistant Design and Test Engineer for Siemens Rail, Jim Hassall, said: “I’ve been able to relate electrical theory and principles to this design, whereas my job is more niche. Practically building a vehicle is a miles better way of studying our HND than doing something more paper-based.”

Rolling Stock Engineer for Siemens, Tom Linaker, wants to go on to student electronics at university after his HND apprenticeship with Trafford College finishes.

Tom said: “It is a really interesting way of learning project management. It’s great that we could all be involved in something like this.”

Trafford College team’s go cart will race at Three Sisters in Wigan on Tuesday 18th June.
