At Trafford College we want to ensure you're confident and prepared before starting your course with us.
We know that it can be a bit daunting moving from school to college and especially this year with schools closing early for Year 11 students and the ongoing situation with COVID-19.
To make sure you feel prepared for joining us after the summer each college department has created a downloadable activity sheet for you to look at in your own time, giving you an overview of the course, interactive tasks to complete and even links to videos to get you used to the type of classwork you'll be doing once you join us.
What’s more, many of our course tutors have also put together online presentations to answer questions you might have about your course and for you to find out more about your subject area so you’re prepared and confident for your first day at college.
Below you'll find the departments of the college and within each is a specific area relevant to you.
We offer 15 subjects at A Level, 13 of which had 100% pass rates in 2019; they are taught by specialist teachers, many of whom are examiners in their subject. At the end of their two-year course 90% of our students’ progress in education, most to University but also to Art College and Higher Apprenticeships. Former students always tell us that their time in College was the ideal preparation for University, offering a high level of support and increasing the independence needed to be successful in higher education.
An A Level programme offers you a very flexible choice to combine your favourite subjects from school with an opportunity to pick up new subjects like Psychology and Criminology.
Art & Design and Creative Media
Art and design requires creativity, the ability to come up with new ideas and a keen eye for detail. Building Services Design, Electrical Installation and Gas & Plumbing
Building Services are the systems installed in buildings to make them comfortable, functional, efficient and safe. These systems play a central role in the design or restoration of a building and, as the world moves forward to be more sustainable, Building Service Engineers are now challenged more and more to make the best decisions for the built environment.
The Electrical Installation industry is thriving and you're sure to be entering into an ever-growing trade. A career in Electrical Installation opens the door to a variety of opportunities in domestic, commercial and industrial sectors and the specialisms that work in these areas e.g. fire alarms, lightning protection etc.
Working in Gas & Plumbing you’ll be often be faced with a variety of tasks. Plumbers work in a range of domestic, commercial and industrial sectors installing a variety of different pipework to supply water and remove waste from the relevant buildings.
Business, Law & Accounting
In this broad sector, we design our lessons as a mixture of theoretical and practical sessions, using both online and traditional methods to give students access to every angle of the business world. We provide students with both digital and work-based skills that will see them operate at industry standard straight after College. Childhood Studies and Early Years
Our range of courses will provide you with the skills needed to work with babies and young children through a combination of both theory and practical sessions. Whether your next step is university, an Apprenticeship or straight into employment, studying Childhood Studies at Trafford College will make sure you have a bright future.
Gain hands-on practical experience learning a range of skills including how to design and build a computer network, how to design and create a website, 3D CAD, how computer systems work, and how to protect computers and data by deploying the latest cyber security technologies. Offering Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical, our Engineering courses have never been better. Courses are delivered in a practical hands-on setting where you will gain the technical know-how along with important lessons in health and safety, communications, science and maths. ESOL (English for Speakers of other Languages)
For learners aged 16-19, our ESOL courses for young people, provide a nationally recognised qualification. Alongside your English lessons, you will also study maths and employability and study skills. There are no formal requirements for Foundation Learning courses. All applicants will be asked to attend an assessment event, where the Foundation Learning Team will assess you to find out the most suitable course for you.
At Trafford College we believe that every learner should have the opportunity to continue their education regardless of ability or circumstance, and we have a range of courses from entry to Level 1 to suit all interests and which include a range of support to suit your needs. There are no formal entry requirements for Foundation Learning courses. All applicants attend an assessment event, where the Foundation Learning team will assess you to find the most suitable course for you.
Our courses are designed to help you work towards higher levels of study or employment, whichever you prefer. All courses include maths and English, employability skills and work related learning. We will also work with you to help you find valuable work experience.
All classes up to and including Level 1 courses have a skilled Learning Facilitator to assist you in your learning. Foundation Learning students also have access to a Mentor who is dedicated to the department.
GCSE Full-time programme
Our GCSE Programme is a year exam based course covering a range of GCSES. You will be expected to study ‘core’ subjects English, Maths and Chemistry adding further subjects according to your needs and ability from either Psychology or Sociology.

Hospitality and Catering

Aspire, our AA 'Highly Commended’ on-site restaurant and kitchen is a Centre of Excellence in both food and beverage service, patisserie and confectionary. We give students a unique professional working environment where they can develop the necessary skills they need to cook quality dishes or deliver outstanding service. Drawing on the expertise of industry-experienced lecturers, you will train in our first-class workshops and have the opportunity to carry out hands-on practical work on real vehicles. Working on a range of petrol/diesel cars and light vans, you will be introduced to the skills used in the wholesale and retail trade, from repairing and maintaining vehicles to carrying out corrections to minor paint defects and full vehicle resprays. You’ll find no faults studying Motor Vehicle at Trafford College.
Studying science with us will allow you to explore, experiment and invent using our specialist science labs. You will investigate a broad range of scientific disciplines giving you a comprehensive background in all scientific areas, making it as easy as possible for you to decide what you would like to specialise in after college. Many of our Level 3 science students have gone on to study subjects at University including Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Radiography and Human Biology, with many also progressing to Teacher Training. You may also decide to apply for an Advanced Apprenticeship in an exciting career as a Pharmacy Technician or Laboratory Technician in the NHS or in the wider scientific community.
Sport & Uniformed Public Services
Are you already involved in exercise, health and sport through participation, officiating or coaching? Do you get a buzz from helping others become more active and live a healthier lifestyle? Gain specialist training in a wide range of sports principles and techniques to lead you into a career in coaching, physiotherapy, sports rehabilitation, sports science (including research and development), teaching, sports journalism, marketing and fitness instructing. The Uniformed Public Services courses offer studies in a wide range of subject matter including teamwork and leadership, citizenship and diversity in public services, crime and its effect on society, through to understanding the importance sport and physical activity in the uniformed public services. You will also have the chance to supplement your studies by having the opportunity to take part in extensive outdoor activities through the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DofE) and National Citizen Service (NSC) which are well regarded by employers in the sector.
