Course Overview

On this course you will learn what flowers to select as you gain more knowledge.
Week – Spring Buttonhole Flowers will be provided by the college today and are subject to availability. You will look at wires and gauges, their different uses and suitability for the design you are making. You will practise wiring and taping before completing your buttonhole.
Week – Spring Basket You will need to bring with you a Basket which has a plastic lining (Water-tight) either Wicker or Sea grass. Your tutor will show you an example. Suggested flowers – Freesias, Gerbras, Carnations, Roses, spray carnations, lisianthus Suggested foliage – Leatherleaf, Ruscus, Eucalyptus, Ivy, Asparagus fern, or hardy garden foliage. You may want to bring some Raffia or decorative ribbon to add to your design.
Week – Flat Wrap Spring Bouquet Suggested flowers – Iris, Daffodils, Tulips, Lillies, Pussywillow, Suggested foliage – Ruscus, Eucalytptus, Aspidistra leaves, Fatsia or garden foliage. You will need tissue paper, cello and ribbon You will be shown how to make a decorative bow.
Week – Front-facing Symmetrical Arrangement Suggested flowers – Roses, Lisianthus, Gerbras, Lilies, Crysanths, Carnations, Gypsophila Suggested foliage – Ruscus, Palm Leaves, Aspidistra leaves, Eucalyptus, Salal, Leatherleaf, Garden foliage You will need a container for your oasis your tutor will show you some examples
Week – Modern Spring Vase Arrangement Suggested flowers – tulips or Cala Lilies. Suggested Foliage Bear Grass You are required to bring a CLEAR GLASS GOLDFISH BOWL. Also pebbles, decorative stones or bark and small branches of Hazel. Week 6- Spring Hand-tied Bouquet Suggested Flowers – Tulips, Daffodils, Iris, Anenomes, Freesia, Gerbras, lisianthus and filler flowers Suggested foliage – Ruscus, Eucalyptus, palm, Bear Grass Additional Extras – Ribbon, Hessian, Raffia to tie off bouquet.

Course Requirements

The Tuition fee for this course is œ30

You may be eligible for a full fee remission if you are in receipt of certain benefit, or earning less than œ23,104 per annum (if residing within Greater Manchester), or require this course to progress onto your first full level 2 qualification.

What you will Learn

Assessment

This is an essentially practical course with no formal assessment. Learners will receive constructive verbal feedback each week and will be encouraged to keep a photographic record of their work.

There are no mandatory units on this course, topics include:

 Care and conditioning of flowers
 Principles and elements of design
 Constructing a range of designs in floral foam
 Basic techniques for wiring and taping flowers and foliage
 Designing and making a buttonhole.
