Course Overview

History is an excellent A Level choice as it will help to develop your ability to think critically. In addition to gaining knowledge and understanding of the periods, themes, and topics studied, you will also develop important skills including the ability to distinguish between fact and opinion and to make judgements. The course also provides you with the opportunity to develop research and communication skills. If you are interested in developing a range of skills that will provide you with a firm foundation for a wide range of degrees or careers, then A Level History is for you.

Students follow the AQA A Level History specification.

Course Requirements

PLEASE NOTE – YOU MUST APPLY FOR 3 A LEVELS

Standard A Level entry requirements: 5 x GCSE grade 5’s or above (must include Maths and English Language). However, certain subjects may have additional entry criteria, which can be found below:

Additional Entry Requirements:
A Level History will require grade 5 in GCSE History.

What you will Learn

This course will see you study significant historical events and the way in which these events have shaped the modern world that we know today. History is all about change over time and how wars, policies, laws, inventions and disasters have all altered how people live.

Assessment

Students undertake regular key assessment practice. Detailed feedback is provided to enable students to further develop their work. The course tutor is an experienced senior examiner with AQA.

The final assessment involves two written examinations worth 80% and NEA worth 20% of the final A Level grade.

Progression

Once you have finished, you will have a range of useful skills including the ability to analyse, debate, create a convincing argument and communicate effectively. These will be a tremendous help to you at university and in employment. A well-trained historian can deal with lots of facts, arguments and viewpoints and build up persuasive arguments. Employers rate the skills of a historian very highly and history students find employment in a wide range of jobs.

History graduates progress into a wide range of occupations.

History can lead on to a broad range of careers from law, politics, and business through to creative media, journalism, broadcasting, and management.

Career Options

History can lead you into a variety of different careers, including law, politics and business, journalism, social work and public services, and of course, teaching.

Mandatory Units

We follow the AQA A Level History syllabus.

Component 1: Tsarist and Communist Russia, 1855-1964.
Component 2: Wars and Welfare: Britain in Transition, 1906-1957.
Component 3: Historical investigation – non-exam assessment (NEA).

The NEA (non-examination assessment) is worth 20% of the final A Level.
