Course Overview

In the first year of the course you will study biochemistry, cells and development as well as gas exchange and transport in both plants and animals. You will also study the environment, how variation helps species to survive and look at Darwin’s work.

In the second year you will add knowledge of photosynthesis and respiration, energy transfer, the nervous system, homeostasis, genetics and gene technology.

Biology is best combined with at least one other mathematical or scientific subject, including psychology to double a core range of skills.

Biology is an essential qualification for a number of health related courses. It also develops valuable practical and problem solving skills that are useful for employemnt and higher education.

Through written exams.

The A level is awarded on the basis of exams held at the end of the second year which cover the full course.

There is a separate practical grade awarded on the basis of the practical reports completed over the two year programme.

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are a resident in the UK and the European Economic Area or have been for the last 3 years. You must be under 19 years old on 31st August in the calendar year you start your course.
