Did you know we’re piloting T Levels?
Trafford College is one of only 15 further education institutions in the country to have offered students the chance to try the government’s new T Level work placements in 2018, a trial which has been extended to other colleges this school year.
T Levels provide a broad and deeper understanding of what it is like to work in a chosen subject area with at least 45 days on-the-job experience with an industry employer – as opposed to the usual week of work experience allocated to most students by the Government at present.
Now in their second year, our lucky T Level students have been trialling what it is like to work in science laboratories at the University of Salford, in property services with Bruntwood and practising their legal terminology and processes at law firm, Horwich Farrelly. Their experiences will star in a series of interviews, both in print and for the students at the University of Salford, a special Department of Education video set to be filmed next month.
Workplace Coordinator, Beth Robinson, in charge of the T Level Pilot said: “This is our second year of the T Level trial, which is great because we’re learning more and more about these qualifications each year - increasing the College Group’s preparedness.”
T Levels are new courses coming to colleges September 2020, which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for work.
T Levels will offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement of at least 45 days. They will provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door into skilled employment, further study or a higher apprenticeship.
Students taking part in the trial benefit by being able to tailor their learning to meet their employers’ needs and vice versa. Last academic year, students taking part in the T Level pilot gained apprenticeships and full time jobs from their extended industry placements.
Beth explained: “Students benefit and employers are able to develop skills for tomorrow’s workforce, align their knowledge, improve their corporate responsibility and boost their recruitment pipelines from a talent pool.
“Parents and students need to know that by coming to Trafford College Group they are indeed one of the lucky few.”
