Sport - Level 3 Diploma

Course Overview

This is a full time study programme primarily to provide education and training for sport, leisure and recreation employees. Students who undertake this course will look to progress to higher education and/or employment within the sport and active leisure sector, a sector which has consistently outperformed the rest of the UK economy.

Whilst there are some practical elements within the study programme, content will largely focus on the theoretical application of the key strands of sport.

You will be expected to find a suitable work experience placement in your first year.

Students will also be able to undertake the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme as well as the many different sporting enrichment offers every day. Students will also have free access to the college gym with personalised diet and training plans available.

Course Requirements

5 GCSEs at grade 9 - 4 iincluding maths and English.

Mandatory Units

Areas of study will include:

Principles of physiology and anatomy sport
The physiology of fitness
Assessing risk in sport
Fitness training and programming
Sports coaching
Fitness testing for sport and exercise
Sports nutrition
Physical education and the care of children and young people
Sport as a business
Work experience in sport

You will also be expected to find a suitable work experience placement.

Course Progression

This course is designed for progression to Higher Education and employment; you will be given a programme of personal and professional development to support this. Students will develop a range of different key skills such as organisation, communication and leadership which will help learners achieve their career aspirations. Careers in Sport include physiotherapy, sports rehabilitation, teaching, personal training, coaching, journalism, research and development.

Course Assessment

Within the BTEC Sport course students will be assessed through a variety of methods including; essays, reports, presentations, leaflets, posters and practical sessions.

Course Finance

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
