Light Vehicle Maintenance IMI Level 1

Course Overview

This course is a great introduction to the automotive industry, where you will develop a strong foundation of skills and knowledge to enable you to progress on to the next level of study.

Using a variety of tools and equipment in our industry standard workshops, you will discover how spark and compression ignition engines work, explore lubrication, steering, braking and suspensions while gaining an understanding of electrical systems.

Course Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 2 or above including maths and English

Locating, interpreting and using technical information
Applying engineering techniques
Preparation to become a vehicle driver
Tools, equipment and consumable materials
Engine air and liquid cooling systems
Diesel fuel system maintenance

Wheel and tyre construction and maintenance
Exhaust systems
Electrical foundation skills
Exterior valeting and detailing
The retail motor industry
Electric vehicle awareness
Introduction to low carbon technologies

Course Progression

Upon completion of this course, you may choose to continue your studies with us at level 2 by progressing on to the Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair - IMI Level 2 Diploma. Alternatively, you may choose to complete an apprenticeship to earn while you learn.

Course Assessment

You will be assessed by completion of module packs, one online examination, workshop practical assessments and e-portfolio submission.

Course Finance

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and the European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
