Graphic Design - Level 3 Diploma & Extended Diploma

Course Overview

This graphic design course will support you to develop the creative, conceptual, experimental and technical skills needed within the Graphic Design industry.

The course encourages you to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to briefs. Students will undertake a programme covering key aspects of graphic design and related areas. You will learn to develop idea-led solutions, you’ll explore typography, layout, packaging, branding, advertising and photography and this will be backed up with a focus on traditional art and design techniques. You'll be encouraged to develop your visual language through creative experimentation whist developing your knowledge of industry standard software.
In your first year you will be introduced to the fundamentals of Graphic design, the focus is on core skills, visual image making and building visual research skills. You will explore how to use different media and techniques within your work and develop computer and software skills in our dedicated Mac suites.
You will participate in photography and print workshops and will be encouraged to use a range of traditional art techniques alongside the latest technologies within your work.
In the second year of the course, the emphasis is on use of typography and layout. You will complete Graphic Design briefs with an industry focus, looking at the fundamentals of Magazine Design & Branding.
Based in the Creative Arts Building, you‘ll have the opportunity to become inspired by other creative students as well as the staff's professional and industry experience in order to encourage you to develop all-round skills and fulfil your own creative potential.

Course Requirements

To study this course you will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 9 - 4 including maths English and an art related subject.

Course Progression

The majority of students choose to progress onto study in Higher Education institutions (university). We have an excellent record of supporting students in gaining a place in HE.

For students who want more time to develop their portfolio, The Foundation Diploma is another option.

Course Assessment

Your work will be assessed at key points during both years, according to a 'year plan' which will be provided during your course induction.

During the summer term of Year 2 , you will work on a final major project on a theme of your own choice which will be displayed at the end of year exhibition.

Course Finance

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are a resident in the UK and the European Economic Area or have been for the last 3 years. You must be under 19 years old on 31st August in the calendar year you start your course.
