Foundation Degree in Digital Media Design

Course Overview

Do you have a passion for creative technology and media production? This course is for filmmakers, gamers, designers, artists and image-makers who would be equally at home in a dynamic, multi-disciplined Digital Media environment. You will have the opportunity to fuse traditional and digital media to shape new forms of communication. You will explore areas such as virtual and augmented reality where media creative’s can now develop applications in the areas of art, architecture and entertainment. These applications can offer immersive interactive experiences that will soon potentially, eclipse established media. The industry now requires digital artists to understand – and be able to embrace - this speed of change in their practice.

Course Requirements

All applications will be considered individually however offers will usually be based on:
64 UCAS points (those with 48 UCAS points will be considered for an interview)
BTEC Level 3 qualification (2 years) in relevant subject
Other related Level 3 qualifications. Normally 4 GCSEs at grade C or above (or numeric score of 4/5 under newly reformed GCSE grading), including maths or English

An Access to Higher Education Diploma in relevant area.

Related work experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications

Course Assessment

All students are continually assessed throughout their learning with one to one tutorial guidance or in-group critiques. And on completion of modules are assessed and graded. There are no formal examinations.

Course Finance

Please contact the College for further information.You might be required to visit events as part of your study that might require extra costs. Additional equipment will be required to store your digital work e.g. Hard drives, as well as stationary to record your development work such as drawing pads and drawing equipment. We will endeavour to keep the extra cost to a minimum and some of the purchased items could be at discounted cost. This will be explained in more detail to you at interview.

Course Includes

Ideas and Concepts-Developing ideas for a variety of media outcomes and presenting them in a professional way.

Digital Exploration-Utilising a range of computer software and hardware to create media assets including audio, 3d models and 2d graphics to produce a range of media outcomes that demonstrate your technical and creative media skills.

Immersion and Interface-Creating a virtual reality experience and ways to interact within these environments.

Future-Self-Develop a pathway for your personal career aspirations.


You will be awarded a Foundation Degree that is an internationally recognised qualification and the equivalent of Level 4 and 5 of an Honours Degree. On successful completion you will have the option of leaving to begin employment or continuing with us in the University Centre to top up your studies to level 6 with a full BA Hons Degree.

Course Potential Careers

The understanding of digital design developed on the course as well as the technical skills acquired will equip you as a digital designer for a careers in games development, virtual reality application design and a variety of roles in the interactive media industry.
