Art & Design Level 2 Certificate

Course Overview

The Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design will provide a broad range of creative opportunities that will enable you to create a lively and diverse portfolio. Below are the subjects you will study with examples of the materials and processes you may use.

2D - drawing and painting (with some printmaking)
3D - making work with clay, plaster, papier mache etc
Computer Arts - eg image manipulation using software such as Photoshop
Textiles - hand and machine embroidery, batik, dying and printing etc
Research - looking at the work of artists and designers

Students yet to attain grade C in English and maths will work towards qualifications in these subjects, which are essential in preparing them for progression onto higher level study and/or employment.

Course Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above including maths, English and an art related subject at grade 3

Course Skills & Benefits

Lessons take place in specialist rooms, workshops and studios, with equipment and materials provided to enable you to complete project work. You will be expected to provide your own basic kit, probably similar to the materials you provide for your school work. A memory stick is essential for the storage of digital work.

There will be a number of visits to museums, galleries and other places of interest. For example Manchester Art Gallery, Whitworth Art Gallery, The Manchester Museum, Manchester Craft and Design Centre, The Lowry, Imperial War Museum.

Course Progression

Students who successfully complete the course and English and maths qualifications will be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design or other related courses at Level 3.

Course Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the year. There will be a number of projects for each subject area usually 8 or 9 weeks in length. At the end of each project, you will receive written feedback and suggestions for how to improve your work in the next assignment. During the summer term, you will work on a Final Major Project, choosing a theme from a range of topics.

Course Finance

This further education course is free for all 16-18 year olds who are resident in the UK and ther European Economic Area for the last 3 years. (You must be under 19 on the 31st August in the calendar year that you start your course).
